Jukskei River

Proposed focus area

A Johannesburg river where restoring springs and wetlands upstream could help the water downstream.

The place

The Jukskei rises within greater Johannesburg and flows north through Gauteng, South Africa's most densely populated province, passing neighborhoods such as Alexandra. Our proposed focus is the upper catchment, where springs and wetlands feed the river.

Why it matters

In March 2025, after visiting wastewater works near Springs and Alexandra, South Africa's Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation said the Jukskei River is polluted. He pointed to failing municipal wastewater systems and raw sewage spills, and noted community cleanup efforts. The department stressed protecting sources upstream, because treatment downstream is costly.

These are the minister's statements about Gauteng, not a measured assessment of the river.

Our proposed focus

Our proposed interest is the headwaters: helping protect and restore springs and wetlands so that cleaner water enters the river in the first place. Technology skills, small amounts of equipment and organizational support could help community groups in this kind of work.

Public agencies run the wastewater systems, and we see no role in replacing them. Safe water access is a separate matter led by qualified specialists.

Local expertise

Water for the Future is a citizen-led nonprofit based in Johannesburg, working to rehabilitate the upper Jukskei headwaters. It is the most directly relevant organization in our directory, and it appears there as an organization to explore, not as a partner.

Residents and groups along the river will know its needs far better than we do.

Next steps

The next steps are to meet the people already restoring parts of the catchment, learn what would help them, and understand how any contribution could fit alongside public agencies.

Because springs and wetlands respond slowly, we expect any contribution to be measured in years of steady, local effort rather than a single event.
