Proposed focus area

The Jukskei in Johannesburg: restoring a city river from its headwaters.

Geography and context

South Africa's Jukskei River rises within greater Johannesburg and flows north through Gauteng, the country's most densely populated province.

In March 2025 a deputy minister described the Jukskei as polluted and called for stronger action on failing wastewater systems, while noting community cleanup efforts.

Proposed focus area

Jukskei River

Johannesburg, South Africa

A Johannesburg river where restoring springs and wetlands upstream could help the water downstream.

Opportunities we may explore

Proposals only. Nothing has started.

  • Learn from the citizen-led groups already restoring parts of the catchment.
  • Explore support for headwater and spring protection, where upstream care reduces costs downstream.
  • Offer technology and business skills to community-run projects when asked.
  • Keep public agencies, who run the wastewater systems, at the centre of the picture.
