São Vicente, Cabo Verde

São Vicente coast

Proposed focus area

An inhabited island in the open Atlantic, where beaches face litter carried by ocean currents.

The place

São Vicente is an inhabited island of Cabo Verde, in the Atlantic Ocean off West Africa, and home to the port city of Mindelo. Its beaches and rocky shore face open ocean, so everyday life here meets the sea directly.

Why it matters

Biosfera, a Cabo Verde conservation organization based in Mindelo, reports that the archipelago's place in the North Atlantic leaves its beaches exposed to litter carried by ocean currents. Its newsletters describe beach cleanups, education and a local plastic-processing project on São Vicente.

These are Biosfera's own reports rather than independent monitoring. Its published strategic plan also cautions that cleanups ease the problem only temporarily, and that preventing litter at the source is the lasting answer.

Our proposed focus

Our proposed focus is supportive: help with coastal debris surveys, cleanups organized with local groups, and prevention ideas such as reducing single-use plastics.

On a small island, what happens after waste is collected matters as much as collecting it, so recycling and disposal plans should come first. Marine habitat support would follow local conservation priorities.

Local expertise

Biosfera has worked on conservation in Cabo Verde since 2006 and is the organization to learn from here. It appears in our directory as an organization to explore, not as a partner.

Island residents, fishers and municipal teams will each have their own view of what is useful.

Next steps

The next steps are to learn from Cabo Verde's marine conservation community, understand what already exists for recycling and waste handling, and ask what kind of outside support, if any, is wanted.

We would also want to hear from schools, fishers and neighborhood groups, because prevention depends on everyday habits as much as on equipment.
