Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Msimbazi River

Proposed focus area

A river basin running through Tanzania's largest city, facing floods, waste and sewage all at once.

The place

The Msimbazi River runs through Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, on the Indian Ocean coast. Its basin holds dense neighborhoods, wetlands and mangroves, and a valley that floods when heavy rain meets crowded, low-lying ground.

Why it matters

A 2023 World Bank brief describes recurring floods driven by unplanned building along the banks, degraded wetlands and mangroves, weak drainage and silted channels. It also lists solid waste, untreated sewage and industrial effluent among the pressures that contaminate the watershed.

The brief is mostly about flood resilience and urban planning, and a large public project is under way. Water quality is one concern within a wider set of challenges.

Our proposed focus

Our proposed contribution is small and complementary: support for community-based waste reduction near the river, simple surveys of what collects along the banks, and monitoring that helps residents understand what enters the water. We would not duplicate flood-protection works led by government.

Cleanup and habitat restoration do not make water safe to drink. Safe water access would be a separate program led by qualified local specialists.

Local expertise

Dar es Salaam has active waste-management organizations. Nipe Fagio, a Tanzanian organization working on community waste, was reported by the No Burn network to have led a citywide cleanup day in 2024.

That report does not mention the Msimbazi, so we list Nipe Fagio as an organization with city-level relevance to explore, not as a partner on this river.

Next steps

We would begin by meeting residents, city specialists and community groups in the basin, learning how the current public project affects them, and finding out where extra hands or skills would be welcome.
