Maputo region, Mozambique
Proposed focus area
An urban catchment near Maputo where river water, drains and sanitation are closely linked.
The Infulene River drains an urban catchment in the Maputo area of southern Mozambique. Informal settlements, drainage channels, treatment plants, a hospital and a brewery sit along its banks, and some residents use stream water for urban farming and household needs.
A preliminary 2023 study in the journal Water tested the Infulene River, the drains that flow into it and the city's piped drinking water for faecal bacteria. Most river and drainage samples were positive, and some drinking-water samples were too. Contamination was higher in neighborhoods with the poorest sanitation and shallow groundwater, and in the rainy season.
It was a preliminary study of one catchment. It does not describe Maputo's whole water supply.
Contamination like this is a sanitation story first. Our proposed contribution is modest: support for transparent water testing by qualified local specialists, community-led care of drains and litter hotspots, and technical help with equipment that can be maintained locally.
Cleanup does not make water safe to drink. Access to safe drinking water is a separate program that would involve qualified local specialists, appropriate treatment and regular testing.
WWF Mozambique, part of the global WWF network, works on conservation across the country, including freshwater and ocean themes. We have found no published connection between it and the Infulene, so it appears in our directory as a country-level organization to explore.
Public-health, water and community groups in Maputo will understand this catchment far better than we do.
The next steps are to speak with Mozambican water, health and community organizations, find out what monitoring already exists, and learn where local teams would welcome extra support.
