Antananarivo region, Madagascar

Ikopa River

Proposed focus area

A highland river beside Madagascar's capital, where research has found microplastics that are easy to overlook.

The place

The Ikopa River flows beside Antananarivo, Madagascar's capital, in the central highlands. The city is hilly and densely settled, and the river and its floodplain are part of its landscape.

Why it matters

A 2024 research paper listed by the University of Namur examined the urban Ikopa in wet and dry seasons. The authors found microplastics in river water and in two fish species, with levels in the water rising downstream through the city, especially in the wet season. They link the pollution to urban activity.

The study covers one river system. It does not say whether the fish are safe to eat, so we make no health claim from it.

Our proposed focus

We would begin by listening and learning. If Malagasy specialists see value, we could explore simple, repeatable river observations, litter-prevention ideas for neighborhoods beside the river, and technical support for equipment that local teams can maintain.

Microplastics are very hard to remove once they are in a river, so stopping waste from reaching the water matters most. Safe water access for residents is a distinct program that would involve qualified local specialists, suitable treatment and testing.

Local expertise

Madagascar has an established water, sanitation and hygiene sector. Ran'Eau, a national network, shares information and convenes working groups among organizations in that field.

Its pages do not mention the Ikopa, so we list it as a country-level organization to explore and not as a connection to this river. We would want Malagasy researchers and organizations to define any approach.

Next steps

The next steps are to read more of the local research, speak with Malagasy scientists and organizations, and understand how the river is used before suggesting any activity.

Madagascar

Madagascar's national network for the water, sanitation and hygiene sector. It shares information, brings organizations together and supports project leaders. It offers country-level expertise, and we have found no published connection to the Ikopa.
