Proposed focus area

The Ogun River: understanding a river before acting on it.

Geography and context

Nigeria is West Africa's largest country by population, with a long Atlantic coast. The Ogun River is in the south-west of the country.

The evidence we have for the Ogun is a single 2018 study of one site, so our first step would be to learn more rather than assume.

Proposed focus area

Ogun River

South-western Nigeria

A river where we have little current information, so listening and measuring come before anything else.

Opportunities we may explore

Proposals only. Nothing has started.

  • Find current, reliable information about the river from people who work on it.
  • Explore independent water-quality monitoring at a small number of agreed sites.
  • Learn from Nigerian conservation organizations about how best to take part.
  • Treat this as the earliest-stage focus area on our list.
