East and Southern Africa

Kenya

Proposed focus area

The Tana watershed: caring for water at its source.

Geography and context

Kenya straddles the equator on Africa's east coast. The Tana is the country's longest river, rising in the central highlands and running to the Indian Ocean.

Kenya also holds a share of the Lake Victoria shoreline. The basin's story is largely a story of land: farming, grazing and forest cover shape the water downstream.

Tana River

Upper Tana watershed, Kenya

Kenya's longest river, where caring for the land upstream shapes the water that reaches millions downstream.

Opportunities we may explore

Proposals only. Nothing has started.

  • Learn from watershed organizations already working with upstream communities.
  • Explore monitoring and community stewardship that complements land-care programs.
  • Look for places where technology skills can support, not duplicate, existing efforts.
  • Keep expectations modest until local leaders shape what is actually useful.
